Συνάντηση ΥΕΘΑ Νικόλαου Παναγιωτόπουλου με τον Ανώτατο Διοικητή Συμμαχικών Δυνάμεων στην Ευρώπη Στρατηγό Κρίστοφερ Καβόλι

 

O Υπουργός Εθνικής Αμύνης κ. Νικόλαος Παναγιωτόπουλος είχε σήμερα Παρασκευή, 5 Αυγούστου 2022, συνάντηση με τον Ανώτατο Διοικητή Συμμαχικών Δυνάμεων στην Ευρώπη (SACEUR - Supreme Allied Commander Europe) Στρατηγό Κρίστοφερ Καβόλι (Christopher Cavoli) στο πλαίσιο επισκέψεώς του στην Αθήνα. Στη συνάντηση συμμετείχαν ο Υφυπουργός Εθνικής Άμυνας κ. Νικόλαος Χαρδαλιάς και ο Αρχηγός ΓΕΕΘΑ Στρατηγός Κωνσταντίνος Φλώρος.

Κατά τη συνάντηση, ο Υπουργός αναφέρθηκε στις προκλήσεις που αντιμετωπίζει η Συμμαχία και την συνεισφορά της χώρας μας στο έργο που καλείται να επιτελέσει ο SACEUR.

Επιπλέον συζητήθηκαν οι εξελίξεις στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και υπογραμμίστηκε η σημασία αποφυγής ενεργειών που θίγουν τη συνοχή της Συμμαχίας και δεν προάγουν το πνεύμα συλλογικής ασφάλειας.

Ο Στρατηγός Καβόλι ανέδειξε την σημαντική  συνεισφορά και τον στρατηγικό ρόλο της Ελλάδος ως πυλώνα ασφάλειας και σταθερότητας στην ευρύτερη περιοχή.

NATO Secretary General participates in G7 meeting on Afghanistan

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg took part in the virtual summit of the Group of Seven (G7) on Afghanistan on Tuesday (24 August 2021). He stressed the importance of keeping Kabul airport open in order to continue evacuations. Mr Stoltenberg said that several hundred NATO staff and contractors have been providing critical services, such as air traffic control, fuel supply, and communications at the airport. He added that NATO has also taken on a coordinating role to ensure that people can be evacuated as effectively as possible. 

Mr Stoltenberg said that it was important that gains made by the Afghan people in the past 20 years with the considerable support of the whole international community are preserved. He recalled that NATO’s main priority was to make sure that Afghanistan does not serve again as a platform for international terrorists to attack our countries. He stressed that Al Qaeda is degraded, and there has been no terrorist attack on NATO Allies organized from Afghanistan since 9/11.  Acknowledging that the terrorist threat could re-emerge, Mr Stoltenberg said NATO Allies would continue to combat international terrorism and ensure that Afghanistan does not again become a safe haven for terrorist groups.

Changing lives and the security landscape – how NATO and partner countries are cooperating on advanced technologies

Advanced technologies are rapidly transforming the world – including the security landscape – and are one of the major agenda items of the 2021 NATO Summit in Brussels and the NATO 2030 initiative. With support from NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme, civilian scientists and research institutions in NATO member and partner countries are working together to mitigate risks and embrace opportunities presented by advanced technologies, including emerging and disruptive technologies (EDTs) such as quantum and autonomous systems.

EDTs are technologies that undergo rapid development and can be disruptive to existing systems such as critical infrastructure, supply chains, data networks and much more. NATO recognises both the risks and opportunities that they present, and is working to maintain the Alliance’s technological edge as well as to promote a norms-based use of new technologies. For years, the SPS Programme has been supporting research on advanced civil security-related technologies, including more than 50 projects on topics that are at the core of current discussions on EDTs. “The longstanding research activities of the SPS Programme are focused on practical scientific and technological cooperation, which creates a natural strong connection with the topic of EDTs,” explains Dr Deniz Beten, Senior SPS and Partnership Cooperation Advisor.
