As part of his regular consultations with Greek and Turkish leaders, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke by telephone with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday (24 September 2020) about the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Secretary General welcomed the recent announcement that Greece and Turkey will hold exploratory diplomatic talks. He stressed the importance of resolving the situation in a spirit of Allied solidarity and in accordance with international law.
Military delegations from Greece and Turkey have met multiple times at NATO Headquarters in Brussels to create de-confliction mechanisms to prevent incidents and accidents at sea or in the air. The Secretary General noted the progress made in the talks, stressing that NATO is an important platform for consultations on issues of shared security.
This call followed the Secretary General’s recent discussion on the Eastern Mediterranean with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday (23 September 2020).
