A “Gimme Fibre” Day to place fibre at the core of our lives and economies

Today the world is celebrating Gimme Fibre Day. 4 November is the birthdate of Nobel Prize winner Sir Charles Kuen Kao, who was awarded in 2009 the Nobel Prize in Physics for "ground-breaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication”. This year is even more special as Professor Kao passed away last September.

The FTTH Councils’ Global Alliance, chaired by the FTTH Council Europe would like to jointly pay tribute to Professor Kao who revolutionised fibre optics.

By showing the superior capacity of fiber optic cables for transmitting information, Pr. Kao initiated a revolution in the world’s electronic communications sector and paved the way for the FTTH Councils’ and Fiber Broadband Association’s missionProfessor Kao’s findings dramatically changed our mode of communications and enabled the creation of a full ecosystem for innovation.
As the only future-proof element of the networks of today and tomorrow, fibre is the foundation of our future economies and the FTTH Council from the different regions of the world (APAC, Africa, Europe, MENA) and Fiber Broadband Association (USA and LATAM) remain more than ever united behind their common goal to accelerate fibre adoption. Fibre connectivity is transforming and enhancing the way we live, do business and interact.
It is still a long way forward but fibre coverage is intensifying in every region of the world. While some regions are leading, the countries which were usually lagging behind are making all the efforts to catch-up. It is not only an economic issue, but also a social issue and this is the role of the FTTH Councils and Fiber Broadband Association to work towards this goal to ensure that no end-user, citizens or businesses are left behind.
