Greece & Impunity: Is Greece an International “buccaneer island”?

Aristeidis Floros, a young businessman  was convicted finally in 2017 by Greek Justice in 21 years imprisonment for stealing in 2011 256-million-euro tax collected money. He had 16 more accomplices. He  was freed few days ago by Greek Justice after staying in prison 1 and half year for healthy reasons. From the 256-million-euro Greek Justice managed to spot only 120-million-euro in worldwide safe heavens while 136 million remain missing. Aristeidis Floros had been also convicted recently  in 13 years more imprisonment as the man behind the attempt to kill a lawyer, George Antonopoulos, in Nov 2014.

Aristeidis Floros was only one of many Greek state robbers including state officials like ex-Minister of Defense Akis Tzochatzopoulos or Mayor of the second largest city in Greece Thesalloniki, Vasilis Papageorgopoulos, who have been freed during Alexis Tsipras governance since January 2015 all by coincidence for healthy reasons.

The impunity that Greece as a society and Greek Law & Justice especially to all thieves is alarming. It seems that no matter which political party is ruling from liberals of New Democracy in the past to radical lefts of SYRIZA and Alexis Tsipras a ‘black spot’ resides within Greece that can infiltrate in the state system and impose impunity. Aristeidis Floros’ paradigm among many symbolizes the possibility in Greece to steal 136-million-euro in the same time when international community and organizations like IMF and ECB exercises fiscal policies and result free to enjoy them and be cured indeed.

Greece has ended its external imposed fiscal programs of austerity after almost 10 years, when Lehman Brothers world scandal caused turmoil globally and rendered Greece a EU financial threat for many years. Meanwhile Greece became also a social threat through illegal immigration in 2015 upon Alexis Tsipras democratic ascension in the power. Unfortunately, no matter harsh measures  imposed Greece is unable to seek loans in the markets yet, and international notice and interference should be again reconsidered before it is too late. It is obvious that the official Greek state under Tsipras leadership cannot provide to its people a prosperous or at least respectful life anymore. Greece is among 5 poorest countries in EU along with Bulgaria, Romania, Malta and Slovenia no matter the 37 years inside the Union and the innumerable billions it has received since 1981 through EU programs or its own external loans. Only during the enforcement of the austerity programs by IMF and EU it received in almost a decade 274-billion-euro to end up with 183% GDP debt of 323-billion-euro, unemployment below 25 is above 40% and between 25-34 25% and high pensions still paid from indebted social security funds. Moreover, most of its public assets have been transferred to foreign hands mainly German and a huge brain drain has happened promising a dark future.

Looking into the reasons for this society failure it is crystal clear that another "dark state" operates inside Greece making it an “as if state”. A limited state which may be recognized by UN and has defined borders but gradually creeps into a World “black spot”, a “dark corner” well covered inside EU. Academics are every analytic when referring to modern “para-states” and Greece resembles more and more with a17th and 18th century pirate island where international and national law has no appliance.

The “smuggling highway” of immigrants that opened in 2015 and still inflicts social and political turbulence in Europe is only one sample how illegal network “hubs” operate in Greek territory still unmolested. In the same time, horrible crimes befall in Athens committed by illegal immigrants while challenging people's sentiment of safety and security and proving official state incapable of dealing with these networks again. Conclusively, Greece official state is unable to exercise its sovereignty in the borders with a non-military way, incompetent to prevent illegal crime inside its capital and too generous though its Justice system towards financial criminals reaching the limits of impunity. Sadly, it gives no promise to its own people for a safe and productive future leading them to abandon their nation. What to come is unpredictable if the right measures are not taken.

All mentioned before would never have happened without the selfish international intervention when powerful states and organizations instead of curing Greek problem and unveiling its "state-within-state" preferred to co-operate with it, secure their loans to Greece and mostly with an old obnoxious colonial behavior acquire Greek assets in the lowest prices. After 10 years of people’s poverty not many seem to have changed from the pre-crisis time when Germans and Russians through bribes made huge profits transforming Greece into a total “as-if state”. That is reason maybe why EU and its elites still remain unattractive to EU people.

What should be done for a brighter future is easy and simple. It will be described in the next part of this "Greece & Impunity" analysis. Mainly, only two things are missing, the international decisiveness and a Greek leader. None of them expected to be seen here soon apart from big words from all sides…
