22 Century says FDA nicotine rule is immediately feasible

17 Jul 2018. The plant biotechnology company 22nd Century Group, Inc. has announced in a public statement that the FDA’s proposed nicotine reduction policy is immediately attainable, vitally urgent and in the interest of public health, according to a company press release in Business Wire.

The statement was written in response to...  the FDA’s Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) which suggests a mandate on nicotine levels in cigarettes sold in the United States which would limit the nicotine concentration in cigarettes to a low or non-addictive level. In the press release, the company also stated that it would be willing to license the use of its patented very low nicotine technology, seeds and plants to all interested parties. The company supported the claim that the proposed mandate would be eminently feasible by citing independent studies and research on smokers using 22nd Century’s Very Low Nicotine Content (VLNC) cigarettes in the press release. The company said that these studies have shown that its VLNC cigarettes helped smokers quit more frequently and reduced their overall cigarette consumption.
