There’s a
burgeoning workforce trend that is expected to take over all industries in the
coming year. The gig economy sounds like a new thing, but it’s actually been
around since the beginning of time; it’s just these days that more and more
employers are seeing the benefits of it.
Even if you
aren’t familiar with the term, for sure you have encountered a lot of people
who are part of the gig economy. If you’ve ever ridden an Uber before or had a
project commissioned from an individual, then you’ve met people working under
the gig economy.
Gig economy
simply means a type of labor model that has employees hiring freelance or
contractual workers rather than hiring regular employees. The ride-sharing
company Uber is an example of a company hiring freelancers. Their drivers are
not technically employees of Uber but are just freelancers who drive passengers
whenever they feel like working.
There are
downsides to being a freelancer....
Being a contractor means you have no benefits
from the company, such as holiday or sick pay. There’s also no professional
growth for you within the company because technically, you are not employed
there.
But the gig
economy also has a lot of plus sides, not just in favor of the employers. It
may be a better fit for you if you are a freelancer. Read more about gig
