Nokia and KT sign agreement for 'Programmable World'

-At MWC15, CEOs of both companies sign Memorandum of Understanding for vitalization of the Internet of Things ecosystem and development of future convergence business model
-Companies demonstrate the world-first LTE-M* for interconnection of sensors, for example in utility flow meter, light, and parking counter
-Sign an additional MoU on 5G to support IoT


Nokia President and CEO Rajeev Suri and KT CEO Dr. Chang-Gyu Hwang today signed a two-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the Internet of Things (IoT) to establish an IoT lab and LTE-M test site at KT premises, supported by all three Nokia businesses: Nokia Networks, HERE and Nokia Technologies. The MoU aims to develop an IoT convergence business model covering IoT Future Convergence Solutions and the automotive industry. IoT provides a path for what Nokia calls the 'Programmable World' and opens up tremendous potential to expand the human possibilities of technology...

In addition, the two companies agreed to collaborate on potential 5G areas including 5G standardization activities and 5G trials during the international winter games in PyeongChang in 2018.

LTE-M Demonstration:
 
At Mobile World Congress (MWC), the two companies jointly demonstrated an LTE-M prototype for Machine-to-Machine communication that links together a large number of wearables, cars and smart grid elements, ensures more than 10 years of battery life and provides four times more coverage than conventional LTE. This pre-5G technology enables the cost-efficient connection of a massive numbers of sensors, even in remote or poor coverage locations. Nokia Networks used its end-to-end LTE system including Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station and Flexi Zone for the LTE-M demonstration.

Nokia Networks is already demonstrating key technologies such as 5G that will make mobile networks the natural choice for bringing IoT possibilities to life and enable the 'Programmable World'. Nokia has already been providing IoT-ready radio and core networks that meet today's needs for machine-type connectivity. These networks have minimal latency and powerful capabilities for handling massive amounts of signaling and transaction traffic as well as efficient management of the data.
