The Airports Council International (ACI) Asia- Pacific/World Annual
General Assembly (WAGA) 2014 concluded on 28 May 2014 in Seoul, Korea
after three successful days that included a robust conference programme;
a fully subscribed Safety Symposium; an at-capacity World Human
Resources Forum; a lively exhibition; and ample networking opportunities
at a variety of social events. Graciously hosted by Incheon
International Airport, this year’s event set a record for the highest
number of attendees at any WAGA outside of North America, underscoring
its importance as the premier event of the calendar year for worldwide
airports.
During the Assembly, Director General of ACI World Angela Gittens noted the importance of this year’s theme, “Airports: Serving the customer and the community,” to the continued growth of airports specifically and the aviation industry in general. She noted that to achieve our collective goals, collaboration among industry stakeholders is key.
“Collaboration extends our reach and makes more progress possible,” Gittens said. “We are stronger together, but we would not be seen as valuable allies if we were not seen as capable of providing solutions—if we were not seen as having high standards and were not committed to achieving them. This is where the community of airports— the promotion of excellence—comes to the fore.”
ACI Members supported a number of resolutions that have the customer and the community at their core, including:
• the recognition of safety as our top priority and the ongoing importance of speaking with one industry-wide voice where safety is concerned;
• the continuation of our work with ICAO, ATAG, IATA, CANSO and other industry organizations to ensure that airports are taken into account during policy development;
• the importance of promoting diversity in meeting the demand for the next generation of airport professionals;
• the reaffirmation of ACI’s commitment to developing and growing the worldwide community of airports through, among other things, knowledge sharing;
• a continued concentration on passenger service excellence and understanding passenger perceptions as vital to airports’ continued success; and
• the celebration of a decade of involvement in passenger service benchmarking and a pledge to continue assisting airport operators in their pursuit of customer service excellence...

It is also important to note that the ACI World Governing Board approved ACI Recommended Practice 600A14: Airport Safety Performance Measurement – The Use of Safety Key Performance Indicators. This Recommended Practice is intended to promote the use by airport operators of a standard set of safety key performance indicators. In due course, and after a pilot programme, the data may be used for safety benchmarking based on voluntary and confidential reporting to ACI. It will form an important part of ACI’s future safety strategy, providing data that will be valuable for individual airport operators and the industry at large.
Next year’s World Annual General Assembly will be hosted by Tocumen International Airport and will take place in Panama from 31 August–2 September.
